The Sporting Devils Summer Cup was launched in 2007. Since then the annual tournament has crowned a host of legendary winners and seen many memorable moments. The Hall of Fame picks out some of the most notable events in Summer Cup history.....

1. JOHN & IZZY

In 2007, John's GODS met Izzy's Mellow Yellows in a vital group stage clash. The match finished 2-2 with John on the scoresheet but was more notable for John's challenge on Izzy that can still be viewed on YouTube via this link:

2. CARLING'S CLEARANCE

Another that can still be viewed on YouTube (see below) with this coming in the first ever Final in 2007. Dave Carling's McReds side were already 1-0 down to Phil Williamson's Black Widows when Phil raced through to double his team's lead, much to Dave's frustration....

3. MIGUEL'S MISS

The mechanics of 'Miguel's miss' are that presented with a tap in for his first ever Summer Cup strike Miguel found the crossbar, from virtually under the crossbar.  However that's not really why 'Miguel's miss' is held in such high esteem.

There have been many misses in the Summer Cup but 'Miguel's miss' in 2008 was a legendary event and one that has grown in significance since its occurrence because subsequent 'misses' are now always rated by their comparison to 'Miguel's miss'. If one's subsequent miss measures up to 'Miguel's miss' then the misser is deemed now to have 'done a Miguel'. This is why 'Miguel's miss' was and always will be the greatest, because it is now the barometer by which all misses in world football are measured.

4. JONNY'S REVENGE

The World Cup has Pele, Maradona & Ronaldo and every tournament worth its history needs legends to grace its presence.

Jonny 'Lineker' Evans always had the potential to be a legend of the Summer Cup but in truth he hadn't really done much in the competition until the 2008 clash between The Dark Knights and Rojo. However Jonny is a man that seeks out legendary moments in the same way he seeks out cheese and we knew it couldn't be long before the great man made his mark.

Prior to this key group game Rojo defender David Leake had told his side not to worry about Jonny. A fair enough comment you might say given that on average Jonny scores a goal a year, however Dave having promised to wear a Liverpool shirt if they came back from 3-0 down in the 2005 Champions League final has a track record of tempting fate and fate sought him out again here as Jonny crashed home a deadly hat-trick to propel The Dark Knights towards the Final. It was the first hat-trick in Summer Cup history and ensured that the name of Jonny Lineker would forever take its place alongside that of inferior Lineker Gary in any discussion of world football's greatest goalscorers.

5. JONNY ON THE SPOT

Having notched that hat-trick in 2008, Jonny returned in 2009 as a player at the very top of his game, made by the events of the previous year.

Having bummed one in to score in the group stages while claiming it was a Zola-esque backheel, Jonny had already made his mark on the 2009 tournament before the Final between Jonny's Men In Black and the Yellow Team who's name I've forgotten.

Men In Black made a flying start and roared into a three goal lead but the Yellows were mounting a comeback when they won a penalty that would have reduced the arrears further early in the second half. Few could understand why manager Phil Williamson had put his star player in goal for the Final but in goal Jonny was and he was faced with Dave Frampton's penalty. Dave put it, albeit with a lot of power in the only place Jonny could save it - his gut. Fortunately Jonny had worked on his gut before the game and it did the job, saving Dave's penalty and as the game's momentum swung back to Men In Black they roared on to clinch a 5-2 win.
