Devils end long-running Fives participation

Devils will miss the upcoming Summer Fives 2009 competition, ending eight years of continuous participation in the Crawley Fives.

A shortage of players for the Friday night competition means that reluctantly Devils run of 23 successive seasons in the Fives comes to an end this summer.

The Fives team will aim to return for the Autumn competition starting later this year.

Roundshaw & District Colts  2  Sporting Devils XI  1
Devils kicked off the pre-season fixtures on Sunday (2nd), going down 2-1 at Morden & District Sunday side Roundshaw & District Colts.

Devils gave first runouts to 15 players and found it difficult to settle in the early stages against lively opposition who opened a 2-0 lead in the first 25 minutes. The second-half Devils competed far better and looked well organised, however more pace and creativity will be a must to pose a threat in attacking areas in future games.

Rickie Revell scored Devils goal, a penalty on 65 minutes after Richie Rose was tripped.

Devils: Tanner, Leake, C.Laker, Iles, Garner, Chenery, Foreman, Rose (c), Zbikowski, Frampton, Boyer, Symons, Baller, Revell, Gardner.

Devils next scheduled friendly is on Saturday 15th August against Furnace Green Rovers, now of the Mid-Sussex League. Subject to finding a suitable venue, Devils host West Sussex League side Horsham Trinity Reserves on Saturday 22nd August. The final friendly is away to Heath Rangers of the Mid-Sussex League on Saturday 29th August.

Pre-season training continues on Tuesday (4th) from 6.45pm at Northgate.

New players are welcome to attend at all sessions. The XI are keen to welcome along committed and enthusiastic players with experience of playing regular 11 aside football. Please email sportingdevils@yahoo.co.uk if you'd like further details.

Football Mundial Sixes (Thursdays)
Sporting Devils  0  SBA Elite  0

Devils and SBA fought out a second goalless draw of the season in the Football Mundial Premiership on Thursday (6th).

SBA made a fast start and should have gone in front in the second minute when an attacker shot wide a guilt-edged opportunity at a corner.

Devils responded and Luis Florez came close to a breakthrough at the other end with a low shot well turned behind by the keeper.

Both sides then had goals chalked off for encroachment in the area, for Devils Dave Frampton latched onto a loose ball and fired high into the net before the referee ruled it out.

Alec Savigar on his 100th appearance struck the inside of the post with a great snap shot after good work by Luis and after half-time a great run by Mike Savigar created the best chance of the game for Dave but his shot was wide of the near post.

Devils next match is in the cup, versus Tavern on the Green on Thursday (13th), ko 8.30pm.
